On July 1, 2010, we will change the status of 79 prescription prenatal vitamins based on a recommendation from Medispan, the company we use to classify drugs as generics. Medispan is an independent company that monitors the availability of drugs and produces drug information databases. Medispan recently announced that it no longer considers these prenatal vitamins generics. Medispan says each of these prenatal vitamins has a unique formula that is not available from more than one manufacturer.
On and after July 1, members with three or four-tier Drug Card plans who begin using any of these prenatal vitamins will pay the non-preferred brand copayment or coinsurance for any prescriptions they receive. Members who used any of these drugs before July 1, 2010 will pay the generic copayment or coinsurance for any prescriptions they receive through December 31, 2010.
