Columbia, S.C. – BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina has hired James I. Shew as director of large group sales and marketing for Upstate South Carolina. He is located in the Greenville, S.C., regional office. Shew has extensive knowledge of the self-funded marketplace, labor relations, population health management, risk selection analysis and employer group reporting. He joins the company with 10 years of extensive group health consulting experience, most recently having worked at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina. He has also worked at Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Virginia. He managed both companies’ largest group accounts. He began his career with William M. Mercer as an actuarial analyst and was promoted into group health consulting. Shew is a summa cum laude graduate from Hampden-Sydney College in Hampden-Sydney, Va., where he completed a double major in applied mathematics with honors and in economics. He and his family will move to Greenville from Charlotte, N.C. Shew replaces Jim Armbruster, who retired recently after more than 40 years in group insurance. The Upstate office is located at 1000 Executive Center Drive in Greenville and serves the region including Abbeville, Anderson, Cherokee, Chester, Greenville, Greenwood, Laurens, McCormick, Oconee, Pickens, Spartanburg, Union and York counties. The office employs approximately 100 people in large group and small group marketing, operations and other functions.
