S.C. BlueCross Executive Receives EngenuitySC’s Vision Award

December 02, 2011

Columbia, S.C. — EngenuitySC has honored Judith M. Davis, executive vice president of BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina, with its 2011 Vision Award for her contributions to the growth of the Midlands’ knowledge-based economy.

Davis, who also serves as chief legal officer and corporate secretary at BlueCross, received the honor at EngenuitySC’s annual Ignite! Conference in November. The award goes to a community leader who has contributed significant time and resources toward the goals of innovation and entrepreneurship in the region.

Neil McLean, executive director of EngenuitySC, said the broad scope of Davis’ civic leadership made her a logical choice for the award.

“Judy is one of the most selfless people I have ever met,” McLean said. “Moreover, EngenuitySC and so many other organizations benefit from her thoughtful intelligence and guidance.

“Her contributions to EngenuitySC’s mission and to making Columbia a world-class city are rivaled by very few individuals. She understands that building a knowledge-based economy positively impacts the prosperity of a region’s citizens and demonstrates her commitment to building a better South Carolina.”

Davis represents BlueCross on numerous corporate and community boards of directors. In her professional role at BlueCross, she is the senior officer responsible for five subsidiaries: Companion Life, Companion Captive Insurance, Companion Property & Casualty Insurance Co., Companion Commercial Insurance Company and UCI Medical Affiliates. Senior managers of three divisions also report directly to her — the law department, government affairs and corporate marketing communications.

Headquartered in Columbia, S.C., and operating in South Carolina for nearly 65 years, BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association. The only South Carolina-owned and operated health insurance carrier, BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina comprises more than 45 companies involved in health insurance services, U.S. DoD health program and Medicare contracts, other insurance and employee benefits services, and a philanthropic foundation that funds programs to improve health care and access to health care for South Carolinians.

Headquartered in Columbia, EngenuitySC is a public/private partnership formed to develop and grow the Midlands’ knowledge-based economy. It aims to foster an environment where entrepreneurship, innovation and the creation of knowledge are fundamental elements of the region’s culture, identity, and economic development strategy. Through collaboration with business, government and higher education, EngenuitySC leads initiatives that support research development, promote commercialization and leverage the region’s assets.
