Columbia, S.C. – BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina has promoted Walter J. (Joe) Johnson to president of Palmetto GBA, one of its more than 45 affiliates.
Headquartered in Columbia, S.C., Palmetto GBA (www.PalmettoGBA.com) provides technical and administrative services for the federal government. The company employs more than 2,500 people and has offices in South Carolina, Georgia, Ohio and Illinois.
Palmetto GBA is one of the largest Medicare contractors in the nation. It manages a diverse portfolio of administrative and technical services contracts in support of government health insurance programs.
Among its major work is the administration of Medicare Parts A and B for two jurisdictions. Jurisdiction 1 is California, Hawaii, Nevada and the U.S. territories of American Samoa, Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands. Jurisdiction 11 is South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia, along with Home Health and Hospice for 16 states. In 2011, Palmetto GBA processed more than 196 million Medicare claims on behalf of the federal government.
For 26 years, Johnson has worked primarily in the health insurance information technology (IT) industry. He has more than 20 years’ experience in government health benefit administrative services. He started as a software developer at the former Policy Management Systems Corp. in Columbia, and then provided IT consulting services for nine companies. He joined BlueCross as a lead developer for the Medicare unit in 1991. He has been part of the growth of Palmetto GBA since then, most recently as vice president in charge of IT systems and services.
A Columbia native, Johnson graduated from Midlands Technical College and the University of South Carolina. He is active in the local community, coaching youth sports for 12 years and serving on several school improvement councils and the Richland 2 Gifted and Talented Foundation board. He currently serves as the vice president of the Blythewood High School Touchdown Club.
“Having led the development and support of IT solutions for our operations, Joe Johnson has a well-rounded understanding of all aspects of the business. He’s also created new business processes and had a major focus on business development that has resulted in new business and jobs for our company. In his new role, I’m sure he’ll continue to lead Palmetto GBA’s success,” said Bruce Hughes, president of the BlueCross government programs division.
Johnson fully assumes the role on April 2.
