BlueCard Filing Exception

Normally we ask you to file claims to members’ local BlueCross BlueShield plans. There are, however, exceptions to this rule. This letter will explain different filing scenarios. Let’s take a look at these exceptions:

• A separate vendor processes services and requires direct filing. 
  Contact the member’s home plan directly for additional information and filing instructions for services it may not administer.
• You contract with the member’s Blue plan (for example, in contiguous county or overlapping service area situations). 
  If you contract with the member’s Blue plan, then you should file the member’s claims directly to his or her plan. For example, if you are in our Preferred Blue^® network, then you would file claims to BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina for our members. File claims for any other BlueCard^® member directly to your local plan.

More Helpful Filing Tips

• File claims for ALVAC members directly to BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina. You can identify ALVAC members by the ALW alpha prefix.  
• Providers in South Carolina who contract with the BlueCross Plans in North Carolina or Georgia should file claims for North Carolina or Georgia members directly to those Plans. File claims for all other BlueCard members to BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina.
