Blood chemistry profile and hemogram

Here is information about other blood tests you might have at your screening.

A blood chemistry profile is a screening that measures:

• Blood glucose levels (most significant see section on blood glucose). 
• Blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine analysis, which assesses four components that work together to help keep the kidneys healthy.
• Electrolyte levels in bloodstream (sodium, potassium, chloride and bicarbonate). These elements promote health of cell membranes and carry electrical energy for functions including muscle contractions and communication between cells.

A hemogram screening, or complete blood count, screens for a range of conditions including anemia and infection. It is made up of four tests that evaluate:

• White blood cells (WBC). These are the body primary means of defense against illness. White blood cells react to invasive bacteria by attacking them and preventing potential infection.
• Red blood cells (RBC). They transport oxygen from the lungs to the organs, muscles and other body tissues.
• Hemoglobin (HGB). This test measures the blood protein that helps to transport oxygen to the body tissues and organs.
• Hematocrit (HCT). Also related red blood cells, this test measures the total volume of red blood cells in the bloodstream.

A significantly low reading on any of these tests could signal the presence of disease. Your doctor can advise you on next steps, if needed.
