Unstress for Success: Health Coaching Can Help

How can you have a stress-free life? You can’t — but by managing your stress, you can lessen its effects on your health and well-being.

One strategy that could help: connecting with a health coach through the stress management program. There’s no cost to State Health Plan primary members, and it’s easy to enroll. Whatever the cause of your stress, you need a plan to deal with it. Your coach — an experienced health care professional — will help you assess your stress level and develop a personalized plan to cope more successfully.

While everyone has stress, not everyone understands it. You might think stress only comes with hardship, loss, illness and personal crises. But even some things that are positive — like taking on a new job, getting married or becoming a parent — can also be stressful, because they involve major changes in people’s lives.

Other tips for managing stress

  • One of the best ways to combat stress is physical exercise. Exercise is known to release endorphins into the body. These endorphins are natural pain- and stress-fighters, because they are the body’s own form of morphine. You’ve probably heard it referred to as the runner’s high. But you can get this same benefit without running a step – simply get moving!
  • Relaxation is important in managing stress. It sounds easy, but it takes practice and hard work to learn to relax in the middle of a stressful situation. For true stress relief, you need to activate your body's natural relaxation response. Several techniques for relaxation include deep breathing, practicing mindfulness and yoga. It is best to practice these when you are not stressed so you will feel more confident using these techniques when you find yourself in a stressful situation.
  • Maintaining a healthy, balanced life is also important in managing stress. In addition to exercise, be sure to eat balanced meals and get enough sleep. It is also important to take time for hobbies, foster healthy relationships and volunteer in the community.
