Tobacco Surcharge Mailings 2020

October 7, 2020

Tobacco surcharge for blueessentialsSM  members

Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), insurers can charge higher premiums for tobacco users. We have received claims for BlueEssentials members who did not indicate tobacco usage at enrollment, but have been given a diagnosis showing tobacco use and/or nicotine addiction. These members will be responsible for paying a tobacco surcharge equal to 20 percent of their total monthly premium beginning Jan. 1, 2021.

We are mailing out notification letters to these members this week. View a copy of the letter here.

If your client has NOT been using tobacco, his or her physician can fill out the Tobacco Appeal Form and email it to Membership.Enrollment@bcbssc.com or fax it to 803-870-9439 by Jan. 1. We will review this form and make a determination on whether to remove the tobacco surcharge.
