Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs) allow you to enroll in an annual health plan outside the annual Open Enrollment Period. You may qualify for an SEP if you’ve experienced one of these Qualifying Life Events in the past 60 days:

  • Getting married or divorced
  • Having or adopting a child
  • Moving to a new coverage area
  • Losing other health coverage, which may be due to:
    • Job loss
    • Change in eligibility for Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP)
    • Expiration of COBRA coverage
    • Previous plan decertified
  • Becoming a U.S. citizen
  • Changes in income or household status that affect eligibility for a subsidy or cost-sharing reductions, if you already have Marketplace coverage

You’ll need to provide proper documentation to verify your situation. You must do so before your health plan becomes effective.

If you're eligible for an SEP, start shopping for a BlueEssentialsSM plan. Don't qualify? Consider a short-term health insurance plan.
