BlueCross Employees Volunteered 18,000 Hours in 2018

Dec. 19, 2018

In 2018, nearly 6,000 BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina employees logged 18,000 volunteer hours in support of established nonprofits, which translates into $444,420 in monetary value according to Independent Sector, a national membership organization that tracks volunteerism.

Examples of those contributions in terms of time and personal resources are far ranging, such as building a Habitat for Humanity home to donating $2.8 million to the United Way and supplying 31,000 meals to Harvest Hope Food Bank.

In addition, employees supported other organizations in critical need including donating 545 units of blood for the American Red Cross and funding participation to Boys & Girls Clubs activities for 100 children.

Employees spent holidays helping, as well, adopting 220 families for the Palmetto Project’s Families Helping Families initiative and packing and delivering 250 meals for home-bound seniors and disabled adults on Valentine’s Day for the Senior Resources Meals on Wheels program. Employees provided nearly 1,500 meals for Senior Resources during the February campaign.

“I believe our employees are the most community-centric group in the state,” said BlueCross CEO David Pankau. “Our company strives to be a good corporate citizen, but it’s our employees who bring our commitment to life. They are motivated to make a difference, and the communities we serve are better for it. I am more impressed every year with their generous contributions to those in need.”

While BlueCross supports a foundation that awards grants to South Carolina-based health care nonprofits, the company also authorizes major workplace fundraising campaigns run by employees.

BlueCross has offices in Columbia, Camden, Florence, Surfside Beach, Charleston and Greenville, and others outside of South Carolina.
