Renewal Mailings for Grandfathered and Non-Grandfathered Plan Members

October 20, 2021

We are mailing renewal letters to all individual grandfathered and non-grandfathered plan members this week. The letters will inform members that we filed an average premium increase of 8 percent with the Department of Insurance (DOI).

We will provide additional details when DOI has approved our rate changes. Members will receive a 30-day notice before any changes are made. The planned effective date is Feb. 1, 2022.

Grandfathered plan members

Grandfathered plan members can keep their current plans for as long as they want, as long as they do not make any significant changes. If they would like to make major changes, they can shop for a BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Individual and Family plan during Open Enrollment or 60 days before or after the anniversary date stated in their renewal letter. You can view a sample of the grandfathered renewal letter here.

Non-grandfathered plan members

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) allows non-grandfathered plan members to keep their current health plans until Dec. 31, 2022. If they would like to consider other coverage options, they can also shop for a BlueCross Individual and Family plan during Open Enrollment or 60 days before or after the anniversary date stated in their renewal letter. You can view a sample of the non-grandfathered renewal letter here.
