How We Gave Back in 2025

Dec. 18, 2025

BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina understands the value of being a good neighbor. This is why we are committed to building healthier and stronger communities in the Palmetto State.

Every year, our employees give their time and money to organizations committed to improving the lives of South Carolinians. This year, our employees volunteered more than 19,000 hours.

“As we wrap up another year, we are reminded of what truly sets BlueCross employees apart: our unwavering commitment to community. It’s not just something we do — it’s part of our identity," says Elizabeth Nkuo-Johnson, director of Community Relations at BlueCross.

Raising Awareness

Domestic violence is one of the leading health risks in South Carolina. More than 40 percent of women and 29 percent of men face intimate partner physical violence, sexual violence and/or stalking in their lifetimes. During Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we highlighted the ways people are affected by domestic violence.

Employees donated to Sistercare, a nonprofit based in the Midlands. It provides critical services to survivors and their children. As a trauma-informed agency, Sistercare representatives meet survivors where they are. They offer support, education and empowerment to help break the cycle of abuse. The video shows how Sistercare is changing lives and creating safer communities.

Showing Heart

Heart disease and stroke are the No. 2 killers of women in South Carolina. During American Heart Month, our employees showed off their red to promote awareness for the organization. But it didn’t stop there. More than 100 employees took part in the American Heart Walk. Together, they raised $10,636 to support the organization’s research and prevention efforts.

Doing Good Works

We celebrated our annual Doing Good Works Day with 35 volunteer events across the state. More than 500 employees took part. This year marked the largest volunteer turnout and the highest number of service hours in the program’s five-year history.

We also had opportunities for those living outside of South Carolina. More than 100 employees participated by writing letters to military members, knitting blankets for Children’s Cancer Partners, and preparing meals with Lasagna Love for neighbors in need.

Since its inception in 2019 as Day of Service, the event has more than doubled in size, reinforcing BlueCross’ role as a leading corporate citizen and champion for community impact.

Continuing To Change Lives

For 32 years, our employees have given generously to United Way of the Midlands. This year was no different. They gave $2.3 million to support the organization’s fight for health, education and financial stability for every person in our communities. Since 1993, BlueCross employees have donated more than $58 million to United Way. This year, the nonprofit celebrates 100 years of impact

Our giving spirit continued during Midlands Gives, an 18-hour giving campaign by the Central Carolina Community Foundation. BlueCross employees gave $13,725 in 217 donations to dozens of local groups.

Fighting Diabetes

Diabetes Free SC expanded access to prevention, education and active living across the state. The Spiritual Health Initiative for Eliminating and Lowering Diabetes, known as SHIELD, launched in 2025 and brought a 12-week course to two faith-based sites. More than 100 people completed the first cycle and saw measurable improvements in A1C, blood pressure and weight. Participants also gained a stronger understanding of diabetes through culturally tailored education supported by clinical screenings, coaching and trusted community settings.

Diabetes Free SC also continued its support of Kids in Parks, which now has 71 TRACK Trails open in 31 counties. The trails give families free and engaging outdoor challenges that encourage movement and time in nature. With new sites planned, every county will have at least one TRACK Trail by the end of 2026. Together, these efforts reflect Diabetes Free SC’s commitment to improving health and preventing diabetes for all ages across South Carolina.

Fighting Hunger

Supporting community health goes beyond care. It means making sure every child has access to quality food. We hosted an on-site packing event with Harvest Hope Food Bank in a group effort that’s spanned more than 25 years.

More than 88 volunteers packed 743 boxes filled with nutritious food as part of the Summer Feeding Program. It provided five meals per week to children in need across the Midlands. Those boxes bridge the gap for kids who rely on school meals during the academic year.

Our food drive brought in 1,989 pounds of food and $4,084 in monetary donations. Even our interns had hands-on experience, getting a taste of our community commitment with volunteer days.

Expanding Preventive Care

The BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Foundation continued to expand preventive care for children and helped expand health care services through partners in every region of the state.

Through the School-Based Oral Health Initiative, the Foundation supported clinics to provide oral health services in 76 schools across 12 counties. These clinics provided dental exams, preventive screenings and treatment to children. In 2025, the program grew to include Head Start centers. These provide comprehensive oral health services for children ages 3 to 5 to help prevent cavities before starting school.

The Foundation supported the South Carolina Free Clinic Association in bringing 24 of its 37 member clinics into the national Roadmap to Health Equity in 2025. This effort delivers consistent, high-quality care for people with low incomes or limited access to medical services. These clinics surpassed national benchmarks in key areas of screening and preventive care. By 2026, all 37 member clinics of the South Carolina Free Clinic Association will be tracking clinical quality measures. That will make South Carolina the first state in the country to have its full network of free clinics participating.

These efforts highlight a few examples of the Foundation’s ongoing commitment to improving access to preventive services for children and helping to meet health needs.

Spreading Holiday Cheer

To cap a generous year, our employees spread more joy by adopting 184 families through Families Helping Families. Employees also volunteered at WIS-TV for the 35th annual Families Helping Families giving campaign. They answered calls from people interested in learning how to donate, volunteer or adopt a family. All donations go directly to local families in need of gifts, clothing, food and other essential items during the holiday season.
