There are plenty of beautiful views around South Carolina. But the Midlands three rivers system, recently branded as 3RVRS, may be one of a kind. Stretching from West Columbia to Cayce to downtown, it has plenty of ways to get outside and start moving.

Studies show that spending time outdoors* is good for your mental and physical health. It improves your sleep, fuels your brain, increases creativity and strengthens your heart.

In the heart of our capital city, the Three Rivers Greenway* has been called one of the country’s most promising ways to reconnect with the natural world, just steps from an urban center. Local groups plan to connect downtown to Lake Murray through the trails.

Here are a few ways to take advantage of this natural resource, no matter your fitness level.

Go for a stroll

The trails are lighted and meet standards set by the Americans with Disabilities Act. This makes it easy to take the entire family or a furry friend out for a walk. You can follow along on a walking tour of the Greenway* to learn more about the area.

Idle in nature

You don’t have to run for miles to reap the benefits of time in nature. Simply sitting by the river can boost your mental health*. Across the Three Rivers system, there are plenty of places of play, picnic and reconnect with nature. It is a grandparents’ friend for spending time with grandkids

Look to the trees

There are many benefits to bird-watching (also called “birding”). On the river, birds enjoy access to the water, and you will, too. Birding can be a fun challenge for the whole family, getting kids off screens and into nature. You never know what kinds of birds you will see*.

Pedal faster

With paved paths, the Three Rivers Greenway is a great spot for cycling. Riding a bike is low impact and has health benefits* for all ages. Plus, it can be an ideal way to explore the area.

Take to the water

Become a river rat with a challenging paddle through the white water rapids on the Saluda or enjoy a more leisurely float on the Broad River Blueway*. Our river system offers both. The exercise from kayaking or canoeing isn’t just good for your muscles and joints. It also increases blood flow to your brain, improving focus and memory.

It doesn’t matter what time of year you enjoy the Midlands river system. With our mild climate, you can enjoy it most of the year.
