Medicare Advantage: 90-day Supply for Maintenance Medications

May 20, 2021

Did you know that writing for 90-day supply prescriptions could save your patients money and improve their adherence?  There are almost 500 drugs on the BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Medicare Advantage formulary where patients pay for 30-day prescriptions but receive the 90-day supply at no charge.  These medications, which are on tier one of the formulary, are highly utilized generics used to treat conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and hypercholesterolemia.

Please consider routinely writing all non-scheduled maintenance medications for a 90-day supply where it is deemed medically appropriate and safe to have an extended supply in a patient’s possession.

Benefits to you and your patients:

  • Aligns with formulary design to promote medication adherence in patients
  • Decreased hospitalizations and ER visits when patients are adherent
  • Promotes better health outcomes
  • Decreased visits to the pharmacy
  • Zero-dollar cost share for tier one generics (annual savings of $60 per year per tier one prescription)

Also, by writing for 90-day supplies routinely, members who receive “Extra Help” or low-income subsidy can receive their brand name prescriptions 90-day supply for same price as the 30-day.
