Our people are a big part of who we are. They shape our company and our culture. Many of our employees come from the South Carolina communities we serve.

As one of the state’s largest employers, we know that having a diverse team makes us stronger. Different backgrounds and ideas help us stay creative and lead the way in health care.

This is why we celebrate National Disability Employment Awareness Month* (NDEAM) every October. This month honors the hard work and achievements of people with disabilities. It is part of our ongoing efforts to raise awareness about our inclusive workplace.

A disability is a physical or mental impairment that can limit everyday tasks. In South Carolina, about 1 in 3 people live with a disability. Their impact on our state — and our company — is powerful.

At BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina, we focus on what people can do, not what they can’t. Hiring people with disabilities is not only the right thing to do — it’s smart business.

People with disabilities often bring new ways of thinking and solving problems. Their ideas help us create better health care solutions for everyone.

Building a culture of belonging

We want all employees to feel welcome and supported. That means making sure our workplace is easy to access and gives everyone the tools they need to succeed.

Some people may use a wheelchair, a service animal or special technology to help them work. We understand that everyone is different.

One of the biggest challenges for people with disabilities is how others see them. Some people think having a disability means you can’t do a job well. That’s not true. People with disabilities are skilled, ready and able to work.

Real partners, real impact

We don’t just talk about inclusion — we take action. We team up with groups that help people with disabilities find jobs and live full, independent lives.

We’re proud to work with partners like Able South Carolina*, the South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Department’s Commission for the Blind and Work in Progress.

These groups help us find great talent and share our message. They also help us learn and grow as a company. Together, we build a stronger workforce that reflects the people we serve.
