Turning 26? Let's Talk Health Insurance

You’re officially adulting — and that means it’s time to pick your own health insurance plan. If you have been covered by a parent's or guardian's plan, your coverage ends soon. But don’t stress — BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina is here to help you find a plan that fits your life and your budget.

Why Individual and Family Plans Might Be Your Best Move

If you’re not getting coverage through a job, a Marketplace plan from BlueCross is a smart, flexible option. Here’s why:

  • Budget-friendly: You might qualify for financial help (called a subsidy) that lowers your monthly cost — some plans even have $0 premiums.*
  • Custom fit: Choose the coverage level that works for you — Bronze, Silver or Gold.
  • Virtual care: See a doctor from your phone or laptop.
  • Local support: Our customer service team is based right here in South Carolina.

When to Enroll

Your enrollment window depends on how your parent or guardian gets their insurance:

  • Employer-Sponsored Plan: Coverage ends at the end of your birth month. You qualify for a Special Enrollment Period — you have 60 days before and after your coverage ends to sign up.
  • Marketplace or Individual Plan: You’re covered through Dec. 31 of the year you turn 26. Enroll during Open Enrollment for coverage starting Jan. 1.

*To qualify for the $0 monthly premium plan, individuals and families must meet strict income requirements to be eligible for an Advance Premium Tax Credit that reduces this premium to as low as $0.
